Daisy & Maya- Phenomenal Women

My sister, Liza Daisy Korukundo Turyatemba was born today, 28th May, twenty something years ago. Dr. Maya Angelou, died, today, 28th May 2014. It was once said of the literary genius who never obtained a college degree that; 'her skill in the kitchen is the stuff of legend...' The same can be said of my diva sister and even though she is on what I believe is a cooking hiatus, the world will one day enjoy the most delicious cakes and pastries from her oven. My sister is phenomenal. I have gushed about her on  here  so y'all know how incredible I think she is. A few months ago I was going through a thing and I said to her how I had been feeling alone and looking at me like I was crazy, she said, ' why didn't you talk to me? You know you can talk to me?!' I felt so blessed and chastised all at once. Miss Daisy I know Daisy is not a particular fan of poetry but this  phenomenal woman  piece by Dr. Maya has always been one of her favourite pieces of wr...

In the recent past...

I have been dealing with an increasingly hostile environment at work, a couple of 'teething- type' issues in my relationship with Mr. PG and a steady enlightenment about the character of God. To describe it as a whirlwind experience is to understate. I spent Easter, gloriously, in the company of my +254 family and then came back to the +256 just in time to celebrate being a labourer by taking a day off (May 1st) which I spent with my brother and his yummy son. Wedding plans are beginning to take shape and I am learning what it means to really trust God as I compare the planned costs for our functions to the money in the bank. All silver and gold belong to Him, cattle on a thousand hills as well; so every time I am about to blow a casket, I encourage myself in Him. My hair growing plan is still on course and it should have grown some six inches longer by now at a 1.5 inches per month rate. I am still averse to the braiding process, yet I soldier on as my first act of meet...

Gilbert & Rachelle

Let me tell you about the first wedding reception I have attended this year. I had snobbed all receptions because I simply could no longer deal with the long and drawn out operations that these events are in Kampala. This one, had many sentiments attached to it and even though I almost missed it because I had made plans to go out of town on the wedding's weekend, God orchestrated things so that I did not have to travel. Gilbert and Rachelle invited us to Victoria Hall in Munyonyo. Gilbert is a childhood friend, cousin even, I grew up on lake view drive a few paces away from his home. I remember he tried to teach me how to ride a bicycle and failed. I was lazy back then :)...a couple of tumbles off the bike and I was done trying :)... Anyway, he went off to Canada after his turbulent high school years and has been o'er there since. I know Rachelle from church, All Saints Cathedral...I always thought she was one of the nicer gals.  Now, these two seriously wonderful...

latecomer;my letter.by Turyatemba Jeremiah Kariho on Friday, June 1, 2012 at 3:58pm ·

My not-so-baby brother posted the piece below on his facebook page and I only read it today!!!...I am persuaded it deserves to be read by my peeps on here :) well... most of the time we're given the consolation of "all things in there time"...."all in good time" and the whole related bs. ; i think these would never be able to console me for failing to have more than one vivid memory of my daddy...daddy. a word i would never pull out in a million words...a person that i would never dream of losing yet...well...i lost him...a figure i would live to grow up without...that iron hand in your rebellious times and the generously giver in times worth reward.lol. that's my idea of a daddy. i don't know. i can't begin to imagine... how i have been able to deal with that...is one of the exempli gratia life gives of a gracious God...who in the moment is,as it were, some supernatural being with too much control; with the power to give and to take...A power he...

Dad

Dear Dad, Today, nine years ago, you changed your major  area code leaving many people pretty upset including uncle Kizza Besigye who I know would have appreciated your level of loyalty  considering memories of my S.4 vacation driving around Kampala with you as you manually tallied the Reform Agenda's votes at different polling stations:) Just so you know, Uncle K.B. is hassling; what with pepper spray, kicks, blows, gun butt beatings, being shoved under the car seats of police men (who we are all quite convinced are paramilitary- but that's a story for another day), insults, threats to his life...etc...you would have frothed at the mouth seeing how bad things have become for political opponents of the 'Great 1986 Revolutionary'. Am sorry for putting such a lousy pic of you on the www but you hated pics so it's kinda your fault :) I cut my hair and decided I would like to keep it that way for the rest of my life...in fact, I am contemplating ...

Family

“What can you do to promote world peace? Go home and love your family.”   Mother Teresa “I sustain myself with the love of family.”   Maya Angelou “This is part of what a family is about, not just love. It's knowing that your family will be there watching out for you. Nothing else will give you that. Not money. Not fame. Not work.”   Mitch Albom “There is no doubt that it is around the family and the home that all the greatest virtues, the most dominating virtues of human, are created, strengthened and maintained.”   Winston S. Churchill Last night, my sister, Laura, began her journey back to America to start her Masters programme. It was a bitter-sweet day.We all took a day off work to just be with her and buy souvenirs together, eat together, have some good laughs and later, accompany her to the airport. There were no tears. Firstly because tears don't come easy in the Turyatemba house but really, because we were all simply proud of her (she is...

My Brother: Rodney

His middle name may very well be Rugby :-). I may be wrong, but he stands at 6"1- height that belies his age and the fact that he is younger than me by two years and nine months. There is this ancient rivalry between the two major tribes of Ankole; the Bairu and the Bahima - ati one is better than the other, the people of one are better looking than those of the other...et cetera. Well, my brother, despite being a Muhororo (the cosmopolitan mix of the above mentioned tribes and even other peoples like the Bakiga) looks strikingly like a muhima- long nose, defined jaw and all. His high school nickname T-Rod has come to be a better way to identify him than his designated name-Turyatemba Mutungi Rodney. He is soft spoken- which can be mistaken as shyness. There is a history to that soft spokeness, though, which you (the curious one) would have to buy me a Long Island Iced Tea in order for the revelation to happen :-) In keeping with the Turyatemba house ba...

My Sister: Laura

She has an odd complexion- 'as if, as if' :-) Her middle name is Mirembe- a testament to the aura around her. She is peaceful- she seeks peace. In fact, mom tells us that when she was a baby, she barely cried. Sometimes, mom would wake up in a panic to and check the crib fearing Laura dead because she was too silent. Her- Him is fondly reffered to as FX :-) She is the liberal. Open-minded. Emancipated. Shunning all straight jacket ideas. Her hair is natural- which speaks to her originality, her comfort in her own skin. She has the most perfectly rounded bum in the house :-) (Am so , going to be killed for this!) Her poison is spelt g.i.n. She is a straight talker- none of that 'beating about the bush' drama for her, please. Her dainty, feminine feet and hands draw out the green-eyed monster in me :-( She is a do-it-yourself gal. Independent. Stubborn, even. Her determination and 'I put-my-foot-down' attitude to life is admirable. She is...

My Brother: Jeremiah

His name means, God Exalts. His forehead is marked with a cross shaped scar. He wears spectacles. He is 19 going on 30 :-) He is the last born. He is wise beyond his years; philosophical even. He is a natural gentleman. He loves Jesus. He can always be counted on to make me smile :-)- a testimony to his optimism in all things. He can fix ANYTHING electrical; evidence of his experimental nature. He first drove a car when he was 8 years old (he is daring like that!) He will choose Nile Special or Tusker Malt , depending on his mood. He had a 'long hair keeping' phase that almost drove mom mad :-) He loves to dance. He is an excellent actor. His eye's apple is a damsel named Sheila :-) He weighs....kg (I can't reveal this, coz he wishes he was heavier)  :-) He has a quick temper :-( He is the only person I know who likes to eat posho and beans! He has the nicest hands and feet in our home exactly like our late Dad's. He wants to retire at 30; whi...

My Sister: Liza

Let me tell you about my '20-something going on 40' year old sister. She is 5"5. She is a yellow banana :-). She wears spectacles. She loves to wear (and consequently to buy [ very often ])high heels. She sounds like a man in the morning, deep throated voice and laughter. She loves music, can sing along to most of the popular R n B 'buyimba'. She can do some pretty fascinating make-up on any face, real artistry. She is a Queen and must be treated as such (Paul is the only man who has understood this better than anyone). The hair that grows from the roots of her scalp has been the igniter of envy from femalefolk in her life since forever :-). She loves colour, do not give her greys and blacks. She can cook up a storm, give her any recipe and she will bring it to life. She drives a hard bargain, for all her lack of fluency in vernacular, she never fails to get the best deal on clothes, shoes, bags, whatever. She, unlike me, does not easily get up to ...
